Well I’ve been back in the States for almost 2 months now and let’s just say that life is completely different! It’s not a bad thing but it is an adjustment.
Here’s a list of a few things that are different…
1. Air conditioning – I hate this now (I'm in south Texas so we're still using it from time to time). I’m constantly turning it off in the car and in the house. My mom is probably getting a little aggravated with me (but she’s not showing it). I don’t know why. It’s just something about the cold air blowing on me. I’m only used to outside air now.
2. Prices – Everything here is so expensive. I had a minor freak out when I saw how much a coke was so I’ve been drinking water from the tap, which is also an adjustment – no filter needed.
3. Walking – I miss walking everywhere. Here if I walk everywhere I’ll get some crazy looks. I even thought about walking to the next town when I first got back. It’s a 45 min drive away, which isn’t bad, but I’m pretty sure my mom wouldn’t be too happy about that.
4. Look people in the eye. In Peru looking someone in the eye (especially a man) meant something different than it does here so I got out of the habit of looking people in the eye. I didn’t notice it at first but when I went into a gas station and 3 people talked to me but I didn’t look one in the eye was when I noticed I have a problem. I’m working on this. I really want to look people in the eye again!!
5. Majority of the people being taller than I – it’s strange that most people are taller than I am. I find myself just in awe of tall people… like they’re something strange. I don’t know. I don’t understand it. I guess just 2 years of being one of the tallest people and then coming back to the States and not being that tall anymore is an adjustment.
6. Sleep on most anytime of transportation- I’ve gotten really good and just falling asleep anywhere. Well that’s a good thing when I was in Peru and traveled a lot. Here in the States, falling asleep at any given time is not exactly a good thing. I have gotten pretty good at falling asleep on planes before even taking off. It’s always fun waking up and being in the air and the last the I remember was buckling my seatbelt.
7. Taxes – In Peru, the taxes were included in all prices so there were no sales tax. Now being back in the States, it’s quite strange.
8. Not having to carry around toilet paper everywhere – they always have it in the bathrooms here!
9. Hot water – it’s everywhere!! This is one thing I will never get tired of…. that and showers.
10.Food and drinks – I can pretty much eat or drink almost anything now. Before I left I pretty much had the diet of a 5 year old. My favorite foods were chicken and mac n cheese. They still are but I will eat lots of other things now!
11.Landscape – In Peru, I lived in the Andes Mountains at about 10,000-11,000 ft. I am currently in Texas and it’s FLAT!! Like for real, as far as you can see... it’s just flat! It’s God’s creation so it is beautiful. The sunsets are wonderful! But it’s a little different than my mountains in Peru... :(
