I have a new story dealing with the school we teach English at every morning at 7 am. Nothing shocks us anymore but we still find it all pretty entertaining!
Well this past month Mandy and I have been discussing possibly not teaching at the school anymore. This would free up more time to go to villages and work there. We hadn’t decided anything definite but Mandy went ahead and told her girls she teaches that we probably won’t teach next month. Well the girls in turn went and told the director, Victor. One day as we were leaving class, Mandy’s students were talking to Victor and he then called us over and said, “Mandy, do you have something to tell me?” -Like we were getting scolded. We told him that we were thinking about not teaching anymore but we hadn’t made a final decision yet. We would let him know first thing the next week.
The day came when we had to tell him an answer. We had decided to just go ahead and tell him no. Well upon telling him this, he then explains that it’s probably a good thing since people were coming around to check out the schools and we were there teaching illegally. WHAT?! We never knew anything about that! He said since we didn’t have a contract we were illegally teaching. Obviously we were shocked and this confirmed that we should quit. We discussed this with one of our Peruvian friends and he said that we really weren’t illegal because we have residency here and Victor didn’t know that but still why would he hire us thinking it was illegal?? Oh Peru!
